AFTER snapping up five new players from rivals Manchester, Sedgley Park have decided to reward some of their promising youngsters.
Phil Largan, Dom Kohler, Paul Urmston and Matt Lamprey — all products of the club’s junior set-up — have been awarded first-team contracts after impressing last season.
Winger Largan, fly-half Kohler, scrum-half Urmston and number eight Lamprey represent what head coach Rich Senior hopes will be an important part of the club’s future.
“We’ve been looking at our successful second team — it’s won the league title two years on the trot — to provide future first teamers and these four we think may fit the bill,” he said.
“We’re always looking to give opportunities to our home grown youngsters and all four have a significant amount of potential, but it’s important they work hard on their skills and physical conditioning over the summer if they are to mature into reliable first-team players.
“Largan has been a consistent performer for the second team for the past few seasons and although slightly built, he punches way above his weight.
“Kohler is a promising 10; Urmston is a sniping scrum-half while Lamprey is a pacy back rower. All four have undoubted promise but all four also have a lot of hard work ahead of them if they are to fulfil that promise.”
And there maybe more in the pipeline. He added: “We’re looking to maybe give one or two more first-team contracts along with giving more second teamers a taste of the first team action next season.”
Tigers Matt Riley and Juan Crous have been named in the Lancashire starting 15 to face Roses rivals Yorkshire at Fylde, kick-off 3pm, on Saturday.
Prop Petrus Du Plessis, who joined Nottingham last week along with another former Tiger Steve Nutt — who skippers the Red Rose side — also start, while on the bench is Sedgley youngster Dean Williams and recent signing Garth Dew.
Lancashire won their opening game last weekend, brushing aside Warwickshire 28-66 at Coventry.
The final game of the North Pool qualifying group sees Lancashire entertain Northumberland at Sedgley’s Park Lane ground on Saturday, May 23, kick-off 3pm.
