Prestwich Heys returned to action this week looking to extend their 10-match unbeaten run in the NWCFL Premier Division.

Lee O’Brien and James Hampson’s side had no game last weekend as their scheduled opponents Cheadle Town were involved in the FA Vase. However, Heys were due to return to action at Litherland REMYCA last night before travelling to Colne on Saturday (3pm).

Colne were relegated from NPL Division One last season and are presently 13th in the table with 27 points. They have struggled for consistency while picking up some notable results.

They have completed a league double over third-placed Kendal Town and drawn twice with fourth-placed Chadderton, while defeating sixth-placed West Didsbury a fortnight ago, their last win. With 38 goals scored and conceded there has been no shortage of goals in their fixtures with their striker Lucas Weaver having scored 17 times.

The strength of the league makes Heys’ unbeaten run all the more impressive, sitting fifth with 32 points from 17 games. They have two games in hand on the three sides directly above them, Chadderton, Kendal and Wythenshawe, whom they could pass if they were those to win those fixtures. Similarly, they trail Bury by13 points with five games in hand.

With home games to follow against Longridge Town next Tuesday, (7.45pm) and Squires Gate on Saturday, November 11, the coming couple of weeks could prove a key period in the season as Heys move to the mid-point in the campaign.
