DESPITE Sedgley Tigers running riot against old foes Stockport on Saturday, coach Geoff Roberts is not getting too carried away with talk of promotion so early in the season.

The National League two North title contenders are in third place in the table, just one point behind the leaders, having convincingly won both of their opening two fixtures.

But Roberts is preparing for a much tougher task against leaders and newly-promoted side Ampthill and District this weekend.

“It will be a very different story next week and we’ve got to switch on to that,” he said.

“The important thing at the moment is that we don’t get carried with ourselves.

“Ampthill beat Stockport last week and had a really good result against Leicester Lions this week, so I really think it could be a tough game on Saturday. We will definitely need our feet back on the ground.”

Rivals Stockport could only muster one try and a penalty against the Tigers, and Roberts believes the newly-promoted side could struggle this season.

“We just ran them ragged to be honest,” he said.

“We were stronger, probably slightly heavier and we smashed them up front.

“They were on the end of an onslaught.”

The Tigers, who scored 13 tries in all, had another four disallowed.

They raced into a 7-0 lead courtesy of a Callum McShane try and a conversion from Matthew Riley, before Joshua Longmore pulled a penalty back for Stockport.

Matthew Riley followed up last week’s man-of-the-match performance scoring a further three tries and notching up nine conversions with Chris Wilkinson, Matt Lamprey, Andrew Riley, Oliver Parkinson, Curtis Strong and a further brace from McShane giving the visitors an unassailable 71-3 lead after 62 minutes.

Elliot Fletcher went over for a consolation try for the hosts, with the conversion coming from Longmore, but further tries from McShane and Chris Parrot and conversion from Stephen Collins and Matthew Riley completed the scoring as the Tigers claimed an emphatic 85-10 victory.
