STAND went down to a 49-run defeat to leaders Denton St Lawrence in the Lancashire County League.

The Whitefield men made an encouraging start to their chase of 157 at home, before the wickets began to tumble.

Stand, who are eighth, were going well in the field too when they had the visitors at 36-4 and 62-5 before decent sixth and seventh-wicket partnerships took DSL to 141-7.

Brett Ernst was the home side’s standout bowler with 5-31 off 15.2 overs with Chris Marlor taking 3-32 off 15.

Dan Cranmer did most of the damage for DSL, scoring 47 at number five and Jack Tinning and Ben Tighe at seven and took the score on with 20 apiece.

Openers Luke Davison and Matty Holt made a good start in reply before Davison was out with the score at 42.

That was the cue for the wickets to tumble, though, with the next two victims going for the addition of a single run and the writing was on the wall at 70-7.

Number five Rick Rothwell steadied the ship a little with 18 and Matthew McGladdery offered impressive resistance when he stood his ground for a while at number eight, top scoring with 22 runs.

Cranmer was again the star for the visitors as he took 5-54 off 17 overs.
