Last Stand for County men as they tame top dogs

STAND finished the Lancashire County League season in style with a six-wicket win at champions Denton West.

The visitors put the home side into bat on a sticky wicket and bowled them out for 83.

Peter Walters was in inspired form with the ball, taking 6-41, while Carl Sutcliffe backed him up with a marathon spell of 3-37 from 18 overs.

In reply, after losing Sean Brookes early, a second wicket stand of 48 between Alex Bell and Rick Rothwell was too much for West.

Bell anchored the innings with a steady 20, but Rothwell was the star of the show, hitting a blistering 39 from 18 balls.

His innings included six fours and one maximum into the car park before he was caught at backward point and Stand went on to claim victory in 18 overs.

Stand finished what has been a difficult season in a creditable eighth place.

The key contributions were made by top batsman Bell, who amassed 528 runs, and Matt Curphey, who finished as leading wicket-taker with 51 victims.
