SEDGLEY Tigers began their first season back in National League Two North with with a 36-0 home victory.

But team manager Geoff Roberts will wait a few weeks before deciding how good a result it was.

“We’ve got nothing to measure it against,” he said.

“But one thing’s for sure, it’s a lot better than losing.”

The Whitefield men are looking to bounce straight back into National League One at the first time of asking after last season’s relegation.

They have kept the vast majority of last year’s team with the addition of several young players.

The one negative from last Saturday’s opening day crushing of Caldy – which sent them to the top of the league – was Rob Holloway breaking and dislocating his thumb which will keep him out for three months.

This follows on from Jamie Harrison breaking his collar bone in a pre-season friendly.

“We have lost two of our first-choice back three,” said Roberts.

“And while we have got a decent enough squad to cope with it, we need to have a look around and see if we can find another second row or back row.”

Tigers had no trouble disposing of Caldy, Ben Black giving them a 5-0 lead on 12 minutes and Steve Collins converting his own try seven minutes later to give the Park Lane men a 12-0 half-time lead.

Matt Riley extended it to 17-0 six minutes into the second half, Collins again converting, and the latter made it 22-0 with a penalty three minutes later.

Holloway scored a try on the hour, Collins on target with the conversion, as he was after Jonny Bishop ended the scoring with a final try two minutes from time.

“The defence was superb,” said Roberts. “We were a little bit rusty in attack because we did miss one or two glaring chances – it could have been 50-0.

“It’s difficult to know what to make of it because it’s our first game in this division and the coaches know a few things we need to work on.

“Who knows what lies ahead? But it’s nice to get a win under your belt.”
