STAND CC: Stand lose despite Sean Brookes runs haul

10:00am Thursday 1st August 2013

SEAN Brookes hit a half century for Stand but it was not enough to clinch victory against Glossop at the SCG.

The visitors won the toss and opted to field first.

After losing opener Rick Rothwell for six, Brookes continued his recent good run of form and he was supported by Alex Bell, with the pair adding a second-wicket stand of 84, moving the score along to 100-1.

A back injury forced Bell to retire hurt on 19, but Brookes upped the ante and reached a second consecutive half century, before falling to Coates for 55.

Cameos from Matt Curphey (26) and Dave Taylor (21), saw Stand close on a competitive 169-6. The injury to Bell meant he was unable to field and he was replaced by under-12s player Sam Rubens, who performed admirably in his first taste of senior cricket. Pennington and Dale made a positive start for the visitors, until the introduction of Jack Walmsley removed dangerman Dale (15), caught behind by a sharp Rothwell catch.

Shortly after, Moss (eight) was trapped leg before by Fahad Ali.

But from 45-2, Glossop motored to 120-2, with Pennington and Coates sharing an important partnership.

Stand then picked up four wickets to reduce the visitors to 149-6, with Ali picking up a further three and Sutcliffe one.

Pennington was one of the wickets to fall for 52, caught by a one-handed Andy Holt catch at slip.

Carl Sutcliffe picked up another wicket but some indifferent fielding did not help Stand’s cause as Stopford (25no) saw his side home by three wickets.

Ali returned 4-54 from his 19 overs and Sutcliffe 2-19 from his nine on an afternoon when luck deserted Stand who are at home to Roe Green on Saturday.
