IT is official — the best curry in Greater Manchester can be found in Whitefield.

After canvassing opinion from food lovers across the county, top chefs shortlisted eight Indian restaurants for the English Curry Awards 'best in Manchester' category.

And at a glitzy awards ceremony held at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel earlier this month, bosses of Forts of India took home the coveted title.

The restaurant opened in 1988 and has become a local landmark in Radcliffe New Road, at its junction with Bury New Road.

Co-owner Luftur Rahman said he was specially delighted with the award because he was nominated by customers, as many awards come as a result of nominations from the restaurants themselves.

"To have that kind of feedback was wonderful and we were in great company on the shortlist," said Mr Rahman, who runs the restaurant with his brother Hafizur Haris.

Mr Rahman added: "The awards evening was very enjoyable and we were thrilled to have won.

"We have a really good reputation and a good customer base, but winning awards like this can bring new customers in and persuade more people to try your food, so it all helps."

After the awards ceremony, Yasmin Mahmood, operations director of event organisers Oceanic Consulting, said: "To be amongst such passionate people who love what they do is truly inspiring.

"It was a fantastic evening and I would like to thank everyone for attending.

The event was hosted by award-winning comedian and actor Mani Liaqat and guests were treated to a special performance of a bollywood ballet by Desi Nach.

As well as recognising the curry industry in all its facets, the event also raised funds for the Amir Khan Foundation.

Recently, Forts of India donated a proportion of earnings to an appeal for flood victims in Bangladesh.

In total, Mr Rahman raised £1,200 which has helped rehome people affected by the floods.
