Bury band Elbow, now one of the most highly acclaimed bands in the world, are going from strength to strength with many top accolades under their belts.
The five-strong group, formed 19 years ago, is made up of lead singer Guy Garvey, guitarist Mark Potter, keyboardist Craig Potter, bassist Pete Turner and drummer Richard Jupp.
Elbow were named Best British Band at this year’s Brit Awards, and scooped the 2008 Mercury Music Prize for their album The Seldom Seen Kid. They were given the prize for Outstanding Contribution to British Music at the NME Awards in February, and also won the South Bank Show Award for best album.
Their dates with the Halle orchestra, as part of the Manchester International Festival, sold out almost immediately.
They staged their final sell-out gig of 2009 on home ground at the MEN arena in Manchester in September.
The band originally met up at Stand College in Whitefield. Following the runaway success of their album, “Seldom Seen Kid”, they became Freemen of the Borough earlier this year.
