* A MAN was beaten about the head when he disturbed an intruder trying to burgle his house in Bury Old Road, Prestwich.

* DEVELOPERS got planning approval to convert the former Plaza bingo hall in Bury New Road, Prestwich, into a salesroom for local firm Baron Antiques.

* IT was confirmed that former RAF serviceman Arthur Colleran, aged 63, was to become the 1985/86 Mayor of Bury.

* Snow and frost decimated the sporting programme, with football games wiped out through Prestwich and Whitefield.
