My name is Margaret Weinstein and this is the story of how my dentist gave me my life back. Dr Paul Sobocinski, my dentist for about a year, gave me seamless dental treatment and, by chance, made a huge impact on my life.

I joined the practice where Paul was a dentist purely because I was looking for an NHS clinic and they were accepting new patients at the time. I booked an examination and expected standard a check-up, maybe with a scaling. However, during the examination, Paul noticed some little spots on my gum, over one of my front teeth. He insisted on taking an x-ray.

As it was a digital x-ray, the results came out immediately. Paul described, and showed me on the x-ray, what he found out. There was an infection around the root that was big enough to suggest that it had been there for quite a while. Since the tooth had root filling and a crown with a post, Paul couldn’t fix it, but he advised me about the procedure that could solve the problem without removing the tooth. It was called apicectomy and basically meant I had to be referred to the specialist who would cut off a tip of the root.

Being anxious about any dental treatment, I wasn’t very happy about the options, especially given that I have never had any toothache around the tooth Paul was referring to. However, Dr Sobocinski eased all my concerns and stressed that it is extremely important to eradicate any infection around the teeth.

The operation was scheduled at Rochdale and, not only it was a success, but was also much less scary than I imagined it would be.  And this was just the start - the good news continued.

For many years I had a severe hip pain which significantly limited my leg movement. My GP couldn't find the source of the problem, despite the x-rays and multiple examinations. Soon after the tooth surgery, I realised that the hip pain was absent and I could move my leg the way I desired to.

I remember I bought flowers, and a Thank You! card where I wrote: “Thank You So Much For Giving Me Back My Life” and I literally danced into Paul’s surgery, showing him what I can do with my legs now!

It has been three years since the treatment, and every time I enjoy my mile-long walks I am reminded of that first examination with Dr Paul Sobocinski.
