HUNDREDS lined the streets of Bury to cheer on 1,400 athletes taking part in the town’s first 10K.

Runners laced up their trainers and hit the streets for the 10K and Bury Family Fun Run yesterday.

The first man over the line was 21-year-old Danny Collinge, from Burnley, who completed the course in a time of 32.59.

The first woman across the line was Katie Geelan, from Bury, in a time of 39.48.

Crowds cheered on the competitors as they set off close to The Rock and ran through the town, taking in a host of landmarks including Bury Town Hall, Bury Parish Church, the Fusilier Museum and Bury Art Museum.

Mr Collinge, who has been running for five years, said: “I took part in the Burnley 10K and came second so when I heard about Bury’s race I thought I have to come.

“I’m so pleased to have finished first with the best time – it was a great route through Bury and I’d definitely come back next year.”

Ms Geelan, who works as head of music collaborating across schools in Bury, said: “Lots of the pupils I work with were cheering me on – I spotted lots of little faces I know from work.

“The weather conditions for the race have been perfect and it’s been great to be able to run in my hometown.”

Chris Nash, aged 27, who is originally from Bury but lives in Bournemouth, was the first wheelchair racer to complete the race in 29.23.
