Speeding driver fined

A SPEEDING motorist has been given three penalty points and ordered to pay £327 in fines and court costs.

Afzal Hayat, aged 45 of Bolton Road, Bury, drove a Volkswagen car on the M60 near Stockport at 60mph in a 50mph zone on November 17 last year.

The charge was proved at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court on June 8 under the single justice procedure.

Man fined for being drunk and disorderly

A TOTTINGTON man has been fined for being drunk and disorderly.

Andrew Barlow, 30, of Bury Road, pleaded guilty at Manchester Magistrates Court sitting at Bury on June 2 to disorderly behaviour while drunk on April 21 in Bury.

He was fined £250, ordered to pay victim surcharge of £30 and costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Driver banned after refusal to give breath sample

A BURY man who refused to give a breath sample to police has been given a community order and banned from driving.

Shane Crossland, 41, of Kingfisher Drive, was asked to provide a specimen of breath by officers after he was suspected of having driven a vehicle.

Crossland pleaded guilty at Bury Magistrates Court to failing to give the sample and was given an electronic tag and must be under a curfew for 12 weeks.

He was also fined £80 and ordered to pay costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Crossland was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 36 months.

Community order given for beating woman

A BURY man who pleaded guilty to assaulting a woman has been given a community order.

Christopher Hilton, 34, of Radcliffe Road, assaulted Hayley McNeil by beating her on February 19.

At a hearing at Manchester Magistrates Court sitting at Bury on Tuesday a community order was made where the defendant must attend a rehabilitation activity.

Hilton was also ordered to carry out 40 hours unpaid work within the next 12 months.

A restraining order was made and he was ordered to pay £25 compensation, £60 victim surcharge and costs of £100 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Community order given to man who ordered fast food and didn't pay for it

A PRESTWICH man has been given a community order after ordering fast food and failing to pay for it.

Samuel Lodge, 18, of Sherbourne Court, pleaded guilty to committing fraud on two occasions.

The first was that on April 27 at Bury he made a false representation when he ordered food for delivery and then didn't pay for it.

The second was that on April 28 at Bury he did the same again.

Lodge was ordered to pay £157.35 compensation and a community order was made where he must wear an electronic tag and be under a curfew for four weeks.

Community order given after assault

A MAN has been given a community order after admitting to assaulting a woman.

Steven O'Donnell, 22, of Fountain Place, Bury, pleaded guilty to assaulting Kelly O'Donnell by beating her on August 9 2015 at Prestwich.

At a hearing at Manchester Magistrates Court sitting at Bury on Tuesday he was given a community order where he must comply with a rehabilitation activity.

O'Donnell was also ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

A £60 victim surcharge was imposed and he was ordered to pay £85 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Man given curfew for stealing from Debenhams

A BURY man has been given a community order after pleading guilty to stealing fragrances from Debenhams.

Barry Walker, 44, of Burns Avenue, pleaded guilty at Bury Magistrates Court to stealing £172.50 of goods from the Bury store.

He was given a community order where he must wear an electronic tag and be under a curfew for one month.

Walker was also ordered to pay £85 victim surcharge and £85 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Man is fined over attack

A 'ONE blow' assault on Valentine’s Day led to a Freetown man appearing in court.

John Cawte, aged 28, of Greenbrook Close, assaulted Robert Crowley in Bury on February 14 and admitted the offence to Bury magistrates on May 27.

Cawte was fined £320, ordered to pay Mr Crowley £250 compensation and pay £85 court costs.

Magistrates said that Cawte had entered a very early guilty plea and had shown remorse.

They added that Cawte was of previous good character and that this was an isolated incident which consisted of one blow involving alcohol.

Man jailed for door damage

MARK Conroy, aged 43, of no fixed address, has been jailed for 28 days for damaging a glass-panel door belonging to Greater Manchester Police in Bury last Friday.

Conroy admitted the offence to Salford and Manchester magistrates last Saturday and was also told to pay the police £200 compensation.

Magistrates said the offence was serious because it was committed while Conroy was subject to a community order.

Man cleared of attacking woman

A MAN accused of attacking a Bury woman has been cleared in court.

Lyndel Acheampong, aged 25, of Whalley Road, Heywood, was accused of assaulting the woman in Bury on November 21 last year and again the following day.

He denied two counts of assault to Bury magistrates on November 23 and was found not guilty at the same court on June

Sex pest told jail an option

A WHITEFIELD man has been ordered to comply with the authorities — or face jail.

Glen Kirkwood, aged 41, of Calder Crescent, was given a community order on April 21 after he was convicted of sexually touching a woman in Bury on August 16, 2014.

Under the terms of the order, Kirkwood had to work with probation officers, but he failed to attend appointments with them on two occasions in June last year.

Kirkwood admitted breaching the order to Bury magistrates on May 11 and, at a further hearing on June 8, was given a four-month prison sentence suspended for a year.

Magistrates said the offence was serious because Kirkwood had shown a wilful persistent failure to comply with the order.

They said probation officers had made every effort to accommodate Kirkwood, yet he failed to cooperate.

Kirkwood must also undergo alcohol dependency treatment for six months.

Vandal is jailed after no-shows

A ROOF vandal has been jailed for five weeks after failing to turn up to do unpaid work.

Last August, Callum Monaghan, aged 23, of James Street, Radcliffe, was given a community order by Bury magistrates after he admitted damaging the houses on July 26, 2014.

On that day, he damaged the roof of Simone Charnock's house in Poolfield Close and then damaged the roof of Anthony Kennedy's house in Harper Fold Road before damaging the roof of Lewis Wrall’s house on the same road.

The total damage was £3,200.

On January 14, Monaghan was back before the bench and admitted breaching the community order by failing to attend appoints on September 9 and September 20.

Magistrates revoked the order and gave him an eight-week prison sentence suspended for a year.

Monaghan must also do 140 hours of unpaid work.

However, Monaghan was back before the bench on June 8 and he admitted failing to attend unpaid work appointments.

One of those appoints was on January 20 – six days after he had been warned by the court to comply.

The final straw came when he was a no show on April 7.

At a hearing on June 8, Monaghan admitted breaching the terms of his suspended sentence and was jailed.

Man sent to prison for theft of toothbrush and meat

A RADCLIFFE man has been sent to prison for stealing a toothbrush and meat.

Darren Tunnah, 42, was sentenced to six weeks in prison after admitting stealing a toothbrush from Boots, Bury, on June 1 and meat from Co-Op, Bury on May 7.

He was given a prison sentence because the offences took place while a conditional discharge was in place for stealing champagne from the Co-Op, Bury.

Tunnah was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £115.

Prison sentence for man with weapon

A MAN has been jailed after admitting possessing an offensive weapon in Radcliffe.

Leon Astley, 25, was sentenced to six weeks for having a lumphammer in a public place.

The sentence was passed because the hammer was used to threaten or cause fear.

At the hearing on June 2 at Manchester Magistrates Court, sitting at Bury, Astley also pleaded guilty to damaging a car. In addition to the prison sentence, a restraining order was also imposed.

Woman given community order for assault

A RADCLIFFE woman has been given a community order after admitting assault.

Kendal Scott, 29, of Firwood Crescent, was found guilty of assaulting Liberty Smith by beating her between April 13 and 17 2015.

A community order was made where Scott was ordered to carry out 120 hours unpaid work.

She was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £60 and costs of £620 to the Crown Prosecution Service.
