MEMBERS of Prestwich and Whitefield Heritage Society are in mourning following the death of their chairman Jack Barrett.

The 69-year-old, of Gardner Road, died at his home on Monday September 14 and leaves a widow Gerry, son Christopher, and daughter Jenny.

He was born and brought up in Prestwich and was passionately devoted to the history and heritage of the town. He attended The National School and then Stand Grammar School. He served two terms in the Army and later was a salesman and taxi driver.

Mr Barrett, who was a dedicated member of the Labour Party, took over as chairman of Prestwich Heritage Society in 2006. He championed several themes, embracing the addition of Whitefield to the Heritage Society, the creation and maintenance of the Prestwich Museum in the library, as well as the Prestwich Timeline in the library.

He was also an enthusiastic amateur archaeologist and organised many digs in the area, helping to shed light on Deyne Hall, the historic Church Inn, the Old Engine Cottage and Stand Old Hall.

Mr Barrett was told recently he needed a heart bypass, and members of the society say his death will be "a great loss."

Cllr Jane Black, chairman of Prestwich Township Forum, said: "Jack was a forum regular, and had recently joined the advisory board on behalf of the Prestwich Heritage Society. His death was a great shock to us all."

A funeral service will take place at Agecroft Cemetery next Wednesday (Sept 30) at 1pm.
