A CARE home in Prestwich has been ordered to improve — and bosses say they have already put measures in place.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) sent inspectors on an unannounced visit to Brookfield Care Home in St Ann’s Road on March 12, which provides accommodation for up to 14 people with mental health needs and is currently at maximum capacity.

Inspectors judged the service as effective, caring and responsive to residents' needs.

But they raised issues with two other aspects of the service: safety and quality assurance.

"Quality assurance systems were not always in place to help support the manager in monitoring the service," the report said.

It added: "Policies and procedures need to be updated to reflect current standards and legislation."

On safety, inspectors expressed concerns that a communal toilet smelled and paper towels and liquid hand wash were not always available.

The report said: "Two toilet seats were seen to be broken. This was a breach of legislation."

Another concern was that staff could not locate a worker's criminal record check document, though there was no specific concern that the worker posed a risk.

"This information must be available as it provides information to show staff are suitable to support and care for vulnerable people," the report affirmed.

The CQC concluded it required Brookfield to improve safety and leadership.

A Brookfield spokesman said: "Since the visit, we have sent out feedback forms to all residents, relatives and our partner organisations.

"We have provided the criminal record check documents to the CQC and addressed all the issues that they raised with us.

"We are pleased that the report acknowledges that residents and staff are happy at Brookfield."
