SMILING youngsters took a trip back in time on Sunday as they enjoyed a family fun day in Prestwich.

Performers rolled back the years at Prestwich Clough Day by dressing up as clowns, magicians and storytellers, bringing a touch of old fashioned fun into the 21st century.

One of the biggest hits with children was a Punch and Judy Show, which was followed by a dazzling falconry display and a unicycle performance.

More than 5,000 people came along to the 10th anniversary show in St Mary's Flower Park and organisers said they were delighted with the traditional feel of the event.

"It was so nice to see children enjoying forms of simple entertainment that will remind their parents and grandparents of their own childhoods," said Clough Day committee chairman David Stanley.

He added: "The people who run the Punch and Judy show said it was one of the busiest years they have had, with crowds gathering round to laugh along with the characters.

"I think for many children, they are used to experiencing such entertainment through their televisions at home, so experiencing something live for the first time is quite thrilling for them."

Other star attractions were Haslingden and Helmshore Brass Band and Oldham Lees Brass Band, who kept the kept crowds entertained throughout the afternoon.

Mr Stanley said he was pleased with people's generosity and said the amount raised through bucket collections on the day should ensure the event goes ahead next year.

He thanked volunteers and sponsors for making this year's event a huge success and said it was an example of how the best of Prestwich can be showcased.

Next, the organisation committee members will turn their attentions towards a series of Bands in the Park performances.

The first one takes place in the flower park, situated off Bury New Road, from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday and features Haslingden and Helmshore Brass Band.

Entry is free, although visitors are advised to bring their own chairs or picnic blankets.
