RAIN showers failed to dampen the spirits of proud villagers celebrating their community's special day.

To mark the nearest weekend to St George's Day, more than 300 people turned out to enjoy the Simister Village Festival, as the village church is called St George's.

The day got off to a drizzly start as Besses Boys Band headed a procession from the Same Yet pub along Simister Lane towards Heywood Road, led by the church's lay preacher Christine Hardy.

Once marchers and spectators had had a chance to dry off in the church afterwards, there was the judging of a fancy dress contest, with no less than 17 entries.

William Bramwell in a superhero costume and Emily McHugh as Snow White came out victors and they won a cash prize and sweets.

Emily also took home some chocolate as she and her brother Oliver teamed up to design a Zorro strawman for the festival's scarecrow competition.

Other winners were Ellie and Bryn Davies, who designed a batman scarecrow and Anne McGee who impressed with her Mary, Mary Quite Contrary Scarecrow.

Meanwhile, the hot dogs and meat pies went down a treat in the church hall and proceeds from the stalls and donations raised £1,073 for church funds.

Joan Knott, one of the organisers, said: "The rain came down and the weather wasn't nice, but that didn't stop us all from having some fun.

"The band did a really good job in keeping the mood light and the church hall was buzzing throughout the day, with old friends meeting up for a catch up. It is always lovely to see.

She added: "I would like to thank everyone who helped and supported the day for their time and effort. It is definitely appreciated."
