ANTI-Semitic incidents are on the rise in Bury, according to the Community Security Trust.

The organisation, which logs racist incidents in a bid to project Jewish people, has revealed there were 15 incidents in July alone, at the height of conflict in the Gaza strip.

According to their figures, 23 anti-Semitic attacks were reported from January to June this year. During the whole of 2013, 39 incidents were reported.

Bury South MP Ivan Lewis said: “This is of great concern and anxiety to the Jewish community.

“There have been an unprecedented number of anti-Semitic incidents, and it is very important that the council and the police provide the community with the maximum reassurance that there will be zero tolerance towards anti-Semitism at all times.”

Mark Gardner, a spokesman for the Community Security Trust (CST), said that most incidents had not been violent, with some featuring verbal or online abuse.

He said: “These statistics speak for themselves: a record number of anti-Semitic incidents, few of them violent, but involving widespread abuse and threats to Jewish organisations, Jews in public places and on social media.

“It helps to explain the pressures felt by so many British Jews this summer, with its combination of anti-Jewish hatred and anti-Israel hatred.”

Mr Gardner added: “CST will continue working with police and Government against anti-Semitism, but we need the support of others.

“Prosecutors also have their part to play. Those who have used social media to spread anti-Semitism are identifiable and should be prosecuted.”
