ORGANISERS of this year’s Prestwich Carnival have issued a rallying call to the community to make this year’s two-day extravaganza extra special.

For this summer’s carnival and grand parade, set to take place over the weekend of June 14 and 15, will be the 90th anniversary.

Members of the carnival committee are hoping the whole community will get behind the landmark event.

There will be a 1920s theme and a focus on attracting some wacky and wonderful floats to feature in the parade.

Launching the carnival plans this week, committee chairman Frank Shatliff said: “When the first community-minded volunteers got together all those years ago to discuss bringing a carnival to Prestwich, who among them would have thought it would still be around now and loved by so many?

“That it has lasted so long and continued to flourish is a testament to all the hard work of hundreds of volunteers over the decades and this year is all about doing them proud.”

He continued: “The emphasis this year will be on the parade that runs from St Mary’s Park through the streets of Prestwich and then back into the park.

“We will be looking for a wide range of groups to enter floats into the parade so, come on — start planning!

“If you like dressing up and having a good time and you are up for a laugh, we would like to hear from you. The funnier the float, the better.

“There is a prize for best group in parade and there will be loads of surprises on the day.”

Last year, the carnival markedly increased the attractions on the Saturday before the parade and a group of Norman war enactment enthusiasts camped in the park to show off their costumes, weapons and battle skills.

Mr Shatliff is keeping tight lipped about what will be in store for the same day this year, but has promised to reveal more as the year goes on.

“I would like to thank everyone for their tremendous support throughout 2013 and I hope it can continue this year too,” he added.
