About 36,800 properties in Greater Manchester were without power this morning, following a fault on an overhead power line.

Power supplies went off at 10.40am and affected customers in Manchester city centre and parts of Salford, Prestwich and Bury.

Metrlonk services to Altrincham were also affected.

United Utilities engineers responded quickly to assess the fault and restore power by using alternative parts of the electricity network. Customers were restored in stages and all except the 700 properties nearest the fault on Cannon Street, central Manchester, had power restored by 11.30am.

Engineers are now working to repair the fault and it is hoped supplies will back to normal later today.

Steve Cox, United Utilities electricity response manager, said: "We apologise to everyone affected by this fault. At this stage our prioirity has been to get power back on as quickly as possible."
