MARKS and Spencer stores in Bury and Prestwich will remain open, despite a wave of shop closures nationwide.

On Wednesday January 7, the brand announced it proposed to close 27 stores and slash 780 jobs nationwide.

But all those closures are in the south, London and the north east, so no jobs will go at the two borough’s stores, in the Mill Gate Centre and on Bury New Road, Prestwich.

However, earlier in the week, the company said it would shed about 1,000 jobs in total because of difficult trading conditions and a spokeswoman added that a further announcement will be made in due course.
