A pipe has burst in Sedgley Park causing a gush of water to soar 30 feet into the air.

Part of the pavement on Bury New Road is said to have collapsed at the corner of Richmond Avenue.

Crowds gathered and the roads were gridlocked due to rubber-necking drivers and attempts by emergency crews to stem the flow of vehicles.

The fire service attempted to cap the burst and while it has been reduced, water is still leaking from the pipe.

A passer-by said: "It is absolutely unbelievable. You just would never expect something like this to happen."

A spokesman for Bury Council said: "The burst water main is causing a large build up of traffic in the area and motorists are advised to use Bury Old Road if possible."

Bury New Road is the main road into Manchester.
