Yob jailed for offensive murdered police officer T-shirt

A YOB has been jailed for wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with offensive comments about the police hours after two officers were murdered.

Barry Thew, aged 39, of Wolsey Street, Radcliffe, was jailed for eight months after admitting a public order offence by displaying writing with intention to cause harassment, alarm or distress Police arrested Thew on Tuesday, September 18 at 2.15pm after he was seen wearing the t-shirt in Radcliffe town centre.

The T-shirt had the words “One less pig: perfect justice” on the front and “Killacopforfun.com ha ha” on the back.

He was spotted by officers less than three-and-a-half hours after PC Nicola Hughes and PC Fiona Bone were gunned down while on duty in Hattersley, Manchester.

udge Peter Lakin, sentencing Thew at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court yesterday, Thursday, jailed him for four months for the offence and an additional four months for breaching a suspended jail term.

Insp Bryn Williams, of the Radcliffe Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "While officers on the ground were just learning of and trying to come to terms with the devastating news that two colleagues had been murdered, Thew thought nothing of going out in public with a t-shirt daubed with appalling hand written comments on.

"Thankfully the overwhelming response from the public - who have inundated us with messages of support and condolence - prove that Thew is the exception and not the rule and our communities were right behind us at our darkest hour.

"To mock or joke about the tragic events of that morning is morally reprehensible and Thew has rightly been convicted and sentenced for his actions."

I think we can all agree, what this lad did at a very sensitive time was in bad taste to say the least and deserved punishment, but a jail sentance doesn't really fit the crime. I'm not defending what he did here at all but at the end of the day all he's done is wear an offensive tee-shirt, surely un-paid work, community service, etc, etc would be more apt in this case.

Let's also put thing into perspective here, all these hate fueled muslim clerics like Abu Hamsa and the like, are allowed to preach hatred IN OUR STREET TOWARDS OUR ARMED FORCES, OUR COUNTRY AND OUR POLICE FORCE, yet get nothing but a slap on the wrist. The Union Jack and poppy burners on 11/11 got a £50 fine. Azhar Ahmed called for all British soldies to be killed in an extremist rant on Facebook/Twitter and got a £300 fine (i read these fact on the BBC website before anyone says anything).

Think about these scenarios closely, can you honestly say this lads crime is now worthy of a jail term, if these aren't?
I'm not racist in any way but just wanted to point out how much (in my opinion) of a massive over reaction by our inept justice system this is. Double standards?

What a stupid man!
When most of the decent people were sad that the brave, good, policewomen, were slain by a evil man, he is wearing a silly shirt.
Lock him up for a long time. He is a waste of space.

When a Muslim, Pakistani, man in Huddersfield was given a suspended sentence for abusing our good solidiers killen by evil Taleban in Afghanistan was wrong. He should be sent to jail for twenty years. The judge was wrong.

He got a jail term because of his criminal history which apparently is as long as your arm. He was already under a suspended sentence for something else.

If I did this yes it would of been\was stupid and insensitive but I wouldn't of gone to jail for it
