The Mill Gate Shopping Centre threw open the doors to its new £250,000 toilets on Wednesday.

The facilities, in Minden Parade opposite Leckenby’s Tea Rooms, feature quotes from some of Bury’s most famous sons and daughters, including Victoria Wood, Danny Boyle and Elbow.

The new facilities include men’s and women’s bathrooms, a disabled bathroom and baby change amenities. They also contain energy efficient lights and hand-dryers.

Work began in June to replace the Mill Gate’s previous toilets, which had been in place since the centre was opened in 1992.

Jean Leckenby, the owner of Leckenby’s, celebrated her 70th birthday with the honour of cutting the red ribbon – or rather a red toilet roll.

Marie Gribben, manager of the Mill Gate, said: “We are delighted to open the doors to our new, modern, stylish facilities. The feedback we’ve had from customers has been great so far.

“The old toilets were 25 years old and there wasn’t really a lot of space to make them bigger or refurbish them.

“We would also like to say a big thank you to Jean for opening the facilities and for all her long service at Mill Gate."

The three quotes featured on the walls of the bathrooms are:

“It’s a good place when all you have is hope and not expectations” - Danny Boyle

“Oh, anyway, it’s looking like a beautiful day” - Elbow

“Stop pouting. Stop shouting. You know I pulled a muscle when I did that grouting.” - Victoria Wood

The shopping centre celebrated its 25-year anniversary in July with a visit from TV star Timmy Mallett.
