COUNCILLORS are expected clash tonight at an extraordinary meeting about the serious misconduct of top town hall figures in a child porn investigation.

Both ex-council chief executive Mike Owen and Mark Carriline, the former executive director for children, young people and culture, resigned amid a probe into their handling of Simon Carter — a former Labour councillor convicted of child porn offences.

Mr Owen resigned on the eve of a disciplinary committee due to hear allegations raised by the reports, while Mr Carriline – who the same committee recommended should be dismissed — quit before a council meeting could be held to vote on its recommendation.

A special Bury Council meeting will be held from 7.30pm tonight to discuss the panel's findings.

Cllr Rishi Shori, the council leader, says that he wants to 'restore public confidence' and has promised the 'fullest possible disclosure' of two external reviews of the case.

The Bury Times will be providing live coverage from the meeting.

Three motions submitted by each political party represented on the council will call for the review into the Carter case to be extended to investigate whether councillors broke child safeguarding policies.
