A BURY man has been charged with making or possessing an explosive under suspicious circumstances.

Nadeem Muhammed, of Tinline Street, has been charged with an offence under the Explosives Substance Act.

The 43-year-old has been remanded into custody and is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court today.

On Monday, January 30, following effective security screening, a man was stopped at Manchester Airport after a suspicious package was identified passing through security.

Airport security stopped the man and the package was seized.

The man was questioned by police officers and subsequently released for further investigation to take place.

Following further enquiries by officers from the North West Counter Terrorism Unit, on Thursday, February 9, officers executed a warrant at an address on Tinline Street in Bury.

Yesterday an arrest warrant from Westminster Magistrates’ Court was issued for Making or Possessing an Explosive Substance under Suspicious Circumstances, which is covered in Section 4 of the Explosives Substance Act 1883.

Subsequently a 43-year-old man was arrested under the provisions of this warrant and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ today.

This incident has demonstrated that the airport checks were effective with a suspicious package successfully being identified.
