Offences

MAGISTRATES have sentenced a man to a conditional discharge for 18 months after he admitted possessing cocaine and using threatening or abusive behaviour.

Bury magistrates heard how Jake Leach, aged 24, of Harwood Walk, Tottington, committed the offences on December 28 last year.

The court decided not to impose a more serious penalty after hearing Leach has no previous convictions and it was a minor disturbance resulting from “stupid behaviour”.

In addition the sentence Leach was ordered to pay £105 in costs and charges and the cocaine was forfeited.

Theft

A SHOPLIFTER has been sentenced to a conditional discharge for 12 months after he pleaded guilty to stealing a vacuum cleaner from the Wilko store in Bury on New Year’s Eve.

At Bury Magistrates’ Court Steven Hodgen, aged 28, of Parkside Walk, Bury, was also ordered to pay a total of £105 in costs and charges.

No compensation was ordered because the vacuum cleaner was recovered.

Assault

A THUG who assaulted a woman and two police officers has been jailed for five months.

Benjamin Helliwell, aged 32, of Peel Lodge, Castlecroft Road, Bury, had initially denied committing the offences on November 13, but subsequently changed his plea to guilty when he appeared at Bury Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that Helliwell, who already had a serious criminal record, assaulted the woman and spat at the two police officers.

In addition to the jail sentences he was ordered to pay his victims a total of £300 in compensation.

A restraining order was made banning his contact with the woman.

Fined

A DRIVER who was caught using a car without insurance has been fined £660 at Manchester Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard how Lajos Kovacs, aged 56, of Westbourne Avenue, Bolton, committed the offence in a Citroen Xsara Picasso on Bury and Bolton Road, Bury, on November 25 last year.

The case against him was proved under the single justice procedure and he was also ordered to pay £151 in costs and charges. Six penalty points were added to his licence.

Harm

MAGISTRATES have sentenced a man to a suspended prison sentence after he was convicted of assaulting a woman, causing her actual bodily harm.

Daley Meager, aged 32, of Walmersley Road, Bury, had denied committing the assault on February 13 last year but was found guilty at Bury Magistrates’ Court.

He admitted harassing the woman between April 16 and July 14 by sending her abusive and insulting text and voicemail messages.

He was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for two years, must undertake 80 hours unpaid work, participate in 25 days of rehabilitation activities and pay £1,130 in costs, compensation and charges.

Addiction

A SHOPLIFTER has been sentenced to have treatment for drug addiction after she pleaded guilty to stealing food, worth £50 from a BP garage in Bury on Boxing Day last year.

At Bury Magistrates Court, Bianca Carter, aged 38, of Connaught Street, Bury, was also fined £60 and was ordered to pay £125 in costs and charges.

Driver

A MOTORIST has been fined by magistrates after he was caught behind the wheel of an uninsured car.

At Manchester Magistrates Court, Roger Kennedy, aged 56, of Bury New Road, Whitefield, admitted committing the offence in a Volkswagen Urban on Radcliffe New Road, Bury on November 25 last year. The court fined him £480, added six penalty points to his driving licence and ordered him to pay £133 in prosecution costs and a victim surcharge.

Plates

A DRIVER has been fined by magistrates after he was caught driving a car without insurance and displaying an illegal number plate.

Bury magistrates heard how Joshua Chadwick, aged 21, of Connaught Street, Bury, used the Renault Clio in Bolton Street, Ramsbottom, on October 21 last year.

He pleaded guilty to committing the offences and was fined £144 plus £115 in costs and charges.

Seven penalty points were added to his driving licence.

Tram

MAGISTRATES have fined a man £220 after he was caught using the Metrolink tram without a ticket on August 25 last year.

At Bury Magistrates’ Court the case against Richard Bell, aged 40, of Griffin Close, Bury, was proved in his absence.

In addition to the fine he was ordered to pay £150 in costs and charges.

Abusive

MAGISTRATES have sentenced Samuel Boardman, aged 23, of Deal Street, Bury, to 80 hours unpaid work after he pleaded guilty to twice using threatening or abusive behaviour.

Discharge

MAGISTRATES have sentenced a man after he admitted using threatening or abusive words or behaviour in Bury on December 28.

At Bury Magistrates Court Aaron Booth, aged 27, of New George Street, Bury, was given a conditional discharge for 12 months.

He was also ordered to pay a £85 towards prosecution costs plus a £20 victim surcharge.

Tram

A TRAM passenger who travelled on the Metrolink without a ticket on August 27 has been fined £220 by magistrates.

The case against Michael Cragg, aged 33, of Caledonia Street, Radcliffe, was proved in his absence at Bury Magistrates' Court.

In addition to the fine he was ordered to pay £150 in costs and charges.

A TEENAGER who was caught carelessly driving a Ford Fiesta on Walmersley Road, Bury, has been sentenced to an electronically tagged curfew for 12 weeks.

Bury youth court heard how the 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had no insurance and was banned from holding a licence when he drove on January 11. He pleaded guilty.

He was sentenced to a youth rehabilitation order with an 8.30pm to 7am curfew plus a 30 month driving ban.

MOT

MAGISTRATES have fined a man £160 after he admitted driving a car without insurance or an MoT certificate.

Manchester magistrates heard how Philip Rennoldson, aged 48, of Copse Drive, Bury, was caught using a Ford Mondeo on Bell Lane on December 20 last year.

In addition to the fine, six penalty points were added to his driving licence and he was ordered to pay £115 in prosecution costs and a victim surcharge.

Meat

A SHOPLIFTER who stole meat from a Bury store has been fined by magistrates.

At Bury Magistrates’ Court Ian Glover, aged 48, of Buchanan Street, Ramsbottom, pleaded guilty to stealing the meat, worth £60, from the Co-op on January 16.

The court fined him £50 and ordered him to pay £60 compensation plus a £20 victim surcharge.
