VOLUNTEERS at a Bury charity have praised supporters for helping them raise more than £7,000 in a long-running campaign.

Bury Cancer Support Centre’s Fill the Hill campaign was first launched last year, encouraging local residents and businesses to take part in a variety of events on Holcombe Hill.

Following its massive popularity, the campaign was re-launched for 2016 and volunteers have expressed their thanks to everyone who joined in activities including a teddy bear’s picnic, a 5k run, and a kite festival.

This year’s activities have brought in more than £7,000 for the charity, in what has been a busy year that has also seen the Bolton Road-based centre extend its opening hours.

Sue Hyland, volunteer at the centre, said: “The campaign has been a big success. We have had a lot of new visitors as well as people who came back from last year. The whole purpose is to introduce people to the centre and to tell them what kind of things we do and how we help people.

“I do think that we have raised a lot of awareness as to what we are doing and showing what a unique and wonderful place this is.

“2016 has been a big year for us and we have been incredibly busy. We had a very successful Christmas fair last week that raised more than £1,500.

“We are going to continue with the Fill the Hill campaign again next year, which will be the third season of events.”

Bury Cancer Support Centre helps anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis, and their family and friends.
