ARSONISTS set fire to the front door of a flat, in a "terrible" attack that comes after a spate of similar incidents across Bury.

Shortly after 1.30am on Saturday, October 8, police were called to a property on Canning Street to reports of arson.

The offenders had approached the flat and set fire to the front door before making off in an unknown direction. Nobody was home at the time of the attack, but extensive damage was caused to the door and the immediate inside area of the flat.

Officers are investigating a series of arson attacks that have taken place this year, but are not treating them as linked, and have moved to reassure residents that work is ongoing to catch the culprits.

Detective Sergeant Ian Partington, of GMP’s Bury borough, said: "Fortunately, no one was home at the time of this callous attack, as it would have been a terrifying ordeal to go through.

“Nevertheless, it was a terrible crime that has caused significant damage to the property and great distress to the resident in the aftermath.

“I would urge any witnesses to the incident, or anyone with information, to get in touch to help us catch the culprit.

“This case has followed several other reports of arson in the Bury area this year.

“I would like to reassure the community that we are actively investigating all of these matters and working to catch those responsible.

“Arson is a serious crime which can result in grave, life-changing consequences and officers will do everything in their power to bring the culprits to justice.”

Since February, there have been reports of arson attacks in Plover Drive, Kay Street, Bridge Street, Scholars Way, and Walmersley Road.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
