ASDA Bury is celebrating the town's culinary legacy by launching a new summer picnic snack featuring...black pudding.

The black pudding sausage rolls are a twist on the savoury British classic with the traditional sausage meat filling replaced with black pudding.

This year has been a big year for black pudding, with the traditional Bury blood sausage undergoing something of a renaissance in recent times after officially being declared a superfood, along with the likes of kale, green tea and blueberries.

As well as being high in protein, black pudding is rich in iron and zinc, along with a wealth of other nutrients.

Bury is known as the Black Pudding Capital of the World and the traditional delicacy, which has been enjoyed in the North West for generations, is first thought to have been made and sold in Bury in 1810.

Asda's new Black Pudding Sausage Rolls are a celebration of the town's heritage.

Asda's head innovation development chef, Mark Richmond, said: "For summer 2016 we have put a lot more focus on 'fusion' foods, twisting classic British cuisines to create products we think our customers will love.

"These black pudding sausage rolls are the perfect picnic food and with black pudding hailed as this year's new superfood, you’ll be bang on trend bringing them out at any party."

Stephanie Coates, Asda Bury's store manager, said: "We are delighted that Asda shoppers across the country can enjoy a new twist on Bury's famous local dish with the new Black Pudding Sausage Rolls.

"Customer feedback for the new snack has been very positive, proving what we here in Bury have known all along – black pudding is simply delicious!"
