A CLASS act!

Pupils at East Ward Community Primary put on their hard hats – as a new classroom was delivered to their school.

A high-tech crane lowered the portable building, which will be used as a classroom, into the playground so it can be ready for the next term.

The school managed to get funding from the council for the new addition which has allowed it to expand and take in new pupils.

Headteacher David Waites said the new classroom will be home to 25 year 2 pupils from September – and that there will also be two separate rooms in the new building to be used for different activities.

Mr Waites said: “The new classroom will make a huge difference to the children that come to the school. It will give them the space that they deserve as we continue to expand the school.”

In September there will be 50 Year 2 pupils and half of them will be using the new classroom.

The school applied to Bury Council for planning permission for the new classroom.

In the design and access statement submitted to the council the school said: "The school has experienced a steady increase in pupil numbers over recent years and as a result of this the main school building has become fully utilised for teaching the mainstream curriculum. The proposed building will provide additional space for specialist teaching of specific subjects to small groups and for intervention."

Only one neighbour commented on the application asking for the correct vehicles to be used in order to not aggravate drainage issues caused by run off from the school grounds.

Bury Council's planning department granted permission for the building for a temporary period of five years.

In their decision notice they stated: "After this period, the building shall be removed and the land reinstated to its former condition within two months."
