A BURY man has admitted killing his neighbour and wounding her elderly mother.

Oliver Faughey, aged 63, of Woodward Close, changed his plea on the first day of his trial today at Manchester Crown Court.

He carried out the fatal attack on the two women in a sheltered housing semi-detached bungalow close to his home on Sunday February 7.

The victims were Maylyn Couperthwaite, aged 52, who died of injuries caused by multiple stab wounds, and her visiting 80-year-old mother Audrey Couperthwaite, who lived in nearby Wooded Close and suffered serious injuries.

Faughey was charged with murder and an alternative of manslaughter as well as attempted murder and an alternative of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The defendant admitted the manslaughter of the younger woman and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm of the older woman.

These pleas were acceptable to the prosecution and the case was adjourned for sentencing on October 4 and the judge ordered psychiatric reports to be prepared.

Faughey was made subject of an interim hospital order until he is sentenced.

At the time of the stabbing neighbours paid tribute to the victims including Leonard Davies, of Woodward Close.

He told the Bury Times: "Audrey and Maylyn are nice ladies.

"I would often speak to Audrey and I admire her a lot.

"She has her health problems and walks with a frame but she is always taking her little dog out for a walk.

"She went up to her daughter’s all the time, and I think she liked to make sure she was okay. I have a lot of respect for her."
