NEW volunteers are wanted to help with vital work supporting cancer victims and their families.

Bury Cancer Support Centre is holding an open day from 2-8pm on Thursday, February 11, and is encouraging members of the public to learn more about its work and what volunteering opportunities are available.

The Bolton Road-based facility is currently looking for people to help with tasks such as IT support, social media, food preparation, gardening, housekeeping, and fundraising.

Centre manager Jan Katana said: "Volunteers are a vital part of our service which could not run without them. Volunteers enhance the team and we recognise and value their contribution.

"You will benefit from volunteering in a warm, supportive environment. While volunteering, friendships can develop which give a purposeful enhancing experience.

"We are sometimes asked how much time would I have to give. The answer is it’s up to you. We are completely flexible. It can be a couple of hours a week, monthly or for specific events."

Bury Cancer Support Centre was first established 12 years ago and moved to its newly refurbished premises in 2014 thanks to the support and hard work of staff, volunteers, and local businesses.

Mavis Holt, a volunteer since the centre first opened, said: “When my husband was diagnosed with cancer in 2003 we went to the centre and it was like an oasis for us both. The treatment we received was out of this world, always somebody there to answer your questions.

"When I was asked if I wanted to become a volunteer I said yes right away. I wanted to give something back and I have never regretted it. The love and friendship I have been shown over the years is fantastic. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to do something worthwhile."

Tasha Kirk, the centre's most recent volunteer, said: “Joining this team couldn’t have been more exhilarating. Since walking through the door I instantly felt the warmth and support the centre had to offer not only for myself but also for the people who attend the centre. The staff have been nothing but welcoming and have helped me settle quickly into the team."
