CARE home residents had to be moved to safety after two fan heaters caught fire.

Fire fighters were called to Walshaw Hall Care Home in Tottington after residents were alerted by their smoke alarm.

The crew attended the incident on Tuesday at 6pm after a strong smell of smoke was reported.

On arrival firefighters identified the smell to be a fan which had overheated and burnt out.

However after unplugging the device the crew discovered that there was a second fan heater which was also burning.

Steve Wilcock of Bury Fire station said: “We are investigating as to whether there is a health and safety issue with this brand of heaters.

“No-one was injured in the incident and the care home had good processes in place to take people to a safe place.

“These type of heaters have to keep ventilated and if there is loose material around them that can cut off that ventilation and cause this to happen.”
