A TOTTINGTON home which cares for people living with dementia has been ordered to improve.

Gorsey Clough Nursing Home, in Harwood Road, which provides nursing care and accommodation for up to 54 people living with dementia, was paid a visit by Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors in September.

A report published this month stated the home ‘requires improvement’, although the service was labelled ‘good’ in individual categories.

It was declared a safe, caring and well-led service, but effectiveness and responsiveness of the home ‘requires improvement’.

The report stated that inspectors found the service had made improvements since the last visit, however they found breaches of health and social care regulations.

It read: “Staff did not receive appropriate support and supervision to enable them to carry out their roles.

“Appropriate arrangements were not in place to assess whether people were able to consent to their care and treatment.

“We found that significant events or changes in people’s needs were not always recorded and care plans and risk assessments were not always up dated following changes. This meant that we could not be sure people were receiving person centred care that met their needs.

“However, we found care records contained detailed information about people’s likes, dislikes and preferences.

“Risk assessments were in place for people for areas of identified risk and for the general environment.

“Improvements had been made in the recruitment process. Staff were safely recruited.”

Adam Goldsmith, the home director said: “We have always worked closely with the CQC and acted immediately to meet their stringent requirements.

“We are very pleased that the report confirmed that the home is safe, caring, well-led with knowledgeable and well trained staff.

“Residents and relatives alike spoke positively to the CQC about the care and support offered by us.

“An immediate action plan has been put in place to address those areas requiring improvement following the inspection in September.

“The care, safety, and dignity of our residents is our overriding priority at all times.”
