A WOMAN was taken to hospital after inhaling smoke from a fire that started in a grill pan.

Firefighters were called to a house in Albert Street, Bury at about 4am after a fire had started from some sausages that had been put on to cook.

The resident had fallen asleep and the fire had taken hold of the cooker.

She tried to put the fire out and in doing so inhaled some smoke, before escaping from the property.

Crews from Bury arrived on the scene and were able to put out the flames and clear smoke from the property.

Crew manager Tony Wilson said the residents did not have a working smoke alarm.

He added: "If they had a working alarm, this would have been a very different story, we have now replaced the alarm.

"I would also advise against cooking anything after coming home from a night out, just make yourself a sandwich as it is much safer."
