BORIS Bikes should come to Bury — says the man who made them a London institution.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, shared his vision for Bury's development while visiting the town's famous market on Friday to support the election campaign of Bury North MP David Nuttall.

The Etonian was mobbed by hundreds of selfie seekers as he hunted for bargains and he came up with a new idea to help visitors such as him.

Mr Johnson thinks that public bicycles should be placed around Bury and made available for hire.

The keen cyclist said: “I am sure introducing the bikes is a great idea. I think they should be called Nuttall bikes. That’s the name that I would recommend.”

Boris Bikes were introduced in London in July 2010 and have been a huge hit with tourists and residents, with 11,500 bicycles available for hire from 742 locations.

Even Prince Harry, Prince William and Kate Middleton have ridden them.

Braving the afternoon drizzle, Mr Johnson added: “I'm really excited to be here in Bury to see David and I am looking forward to going around the market, which is one of the great attractions of the area, and see what I'm going to buy.

"I bet there are lots of bargains on offer."

He added: "Bury looks terrific and I think that David is doing a bang up job as the MP and I'm very much hoping he gets returned.

"His chances are extremely good. There is a big record of job creation here in the North West, a massive amount of new businesses.

"One of the reasons we are here is to look at the strength of the economic recovery. There is a lot of confidence in business here.

"It is growing faster than London and it's great to come here and see the progress that is being made."

Mr Nuttall said: "I'm delighted to welcome him and it's always good to have visitors and especially nice to have Boris Johnson here today.

"I have been telling Mr Johnson what a great place Bury is."

Shopper Veronica Davies met Mr Johnson on the market and had a mixed assessment of his visit.

The 68-year-old, from Whitefield, said: "He was polite and I can see why people like him because he is personable and outgoing.

"Bury North is a closely fought seat, but I can’t imagine visits like today will persuade people to vote one way or the other.

"I live in Bury South and am a Labour voter and that is who I shall be voting for."
