TWO handguns were among dozens of weapons handed into Bury Police last year, it has been revealed.

One of the weapons was surrendered on September 1 and another on October 6, according to documents obtained by the Bury Times under freedom of information laws.

People also passed over three rifles, 32 knives, six swords, five machetes, a crossbow, two air weapons, a knuckle duster and a canister of CS gas.

In total, there were 1,640 items handed in at Bury, Whitefield and Ramsbottom police stations.

Bury residents proved themselves to be honest folk throughout 2014, as they handed in a total of £3,000 in cash to Bury, Whitefield and Ramsbottom police stations.

Good Samaritans took money in 103 times throughout the year.

Three of the cash bundles were contained in boxes and some of the notes and coins were foreign currency.

Valuables worth tens of thousands of pounds in total were also taken to police stations, including 44 items of jewellery, 61 bags, 11 rucksacks, four suitcases and six cameras.

Bury Police's lost property box also includes 62 bicycles and 119 mobile phones. Also handed in were 61 passports, 366 driving licences and 552 payment cards.

Drugs featured frequently on the list, with 195 items surrendered, including medicine, cocaine, ecstacy and cannabis

Among the more unusual items handed in were an iron, some rope, beer, a condom — and a caravan.

Three dogs and two other animals were handed over to police.

Last July, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) held its first gun amnesty in six years, called Give Up The Gun, and 225 weapons were handed in across the county.

Detective Chief Inspector Debbie Dooley, of GMP, said: "Gun crime in Manchester continues to fall year on year since the last amnesty we held in 2008.

"This is a result of continued efforts from the force and our partners working together to safeguard, educate and intervene at the earliest opportunity.

"We therefore want as many weapons as possible and would encourage people to hand them in."
