BURY town centre is the third best shopping destination outside of Manchester city centre and the Trafford Centre, according to a retail consultancy firm.

Javelin Group made the findings in its annual rankings of retail destinations across the UK.

In addition, Bury was ranked as the ninth best location across the North West - up from 11th place last year - and 90th best across the UK, rising from 97th place.

Across the UK, Glasgow was named as the top retail destination, with Manchester in second and Leeds third.

Cllr Mike Connolly, leader of Bury Council, said the findings were a strong seal of approval for the town.

He said: "These findings are yet more proof that Bury continues to go from strength to strength.

"For many years the council has worked with its partners to bring investment and jobs to Bury, providing first-class retail and leisure facilities which both boost our local economy and make Bury such a welcoming place to live, work and visit.

"We look forward to future developments which will make our town and borough the envy of many others."

Bosses from Bury's two main shopping centres also welcomed the news.

Arnold Wilcox-Wood, centre manager at The Rock, said: "Bury is now recognised as a thriving retail destination for shoppers in the North West.

"The Rock Shopping and Leisure centre, the famous Bury Market, the new Fusilier Museum and the East Lancashire Railway prove to be a great attraction to customers from near and far.

This is all set within a town that is clean, safe and easily accessible, making Bury a town that is hard to beat.”

Marie Gribben, Mill Gate centre manager, added: “This is both exciting and welcome news for everyone who works hard to make Bury a great place to live, work and shop.

"Bury is a fantastic town with a strong and vibrant community and Mill Gate shopping centre is proud to sit at the heart of its thriving retail offer.

"We hope that with the continued investment from our new owners that the shopping experience will get better and better."
