A “GRAND” achievement saw a charity football and netball tournament reach its £1,000 target for the fourth year running.

The annual Paulo Franko Cup, which has raised more than £3,000 since it was first held in 2011, this year raised £1,000 for Cancer Research UK and the new children’s hospice in Radcliffe, Grace’s Place.

The five-a-side netball and football extravaganza and fun day saw teams from across the region battle it out for glory at Bury College.

Organiser Claire Casey is one of the founding members of the Paulo Franko Trust, named in honour of her father Paul Casey and father-in-law Frank Gordon, who both died of cancer.

She said: “This year’s event was better than ever, a real family day. We had lots of supports cheering on the players and the teams themselves were brilliant.

“That, combined with the raffle and auction, made for a great day.”

The netball trophy was retained by last year’s champions The Woo Woos and ABCDE FC took the five-a-side tournament by storm for the fourth time.

The trust, which is made up of Paul and Frank’s families, thanked the team at Playfootball and Bury College for allowing the use of their new sports hall.

Nicola Casey, Paul Casey’s daughter, added: “It was great team spirit from the teams, supporters and generous local businesses that made the day work so well and helped us reach our £1,000 target.

“The Paulo Franko Cup will be back next year.”
