RESIDENTS have claimed victory after a long-running campaign calling on Bury Council to clamp down on motorists parking on their road.

Householders in Inman Street say people working in Bury town centre, as well as parents dropping their children off at nearby schools, have blocked access to their homes.

Now Bury Council has introduced a residents parking scheme along the road in an attempt to solve the problem.

Pete Wright, who lives with his wife Marijke, said it had been a problem throughout all the 15 years he has lived on the street.

The street is used as an access road for staff and parents driving to Bury Catholic Prep School, and is also close to Bury Church High School and Derby High School.

Mr Wright, who works as a joiner, said he has previously been blocked in by cars while trying to get off his drive.

He said: “The biggest issue has been people working in Bury town centre looking for free parking, who come and park on our road.

“It has become more and more of an issue over the years with more cars being on the road, so hopefully this will do something to stop it.”

The introduction of a parking scheme comes after years of campaigning by residents, who called on the council to act.

The scheme means that people parking on the road will need a permit from 8am to 6pm, from Monday to Saturday.

Mr Wright said the signs have only been in place for about a week, and hopes that the scheme will now be properly enforced.

He said: “People still seem to be parking on the road, so it might take a bit of time for people to realise.

“We need the traffic wardens to enforce it, otherwise there is no point. I am sure if one person gets a ticket, word will spread and people will stop parking there.”
