A MAN is said to have been driven through the streets of Bury clinging to the roof of a car in an incident that has been described as "like a movie scene".

The terror ride ended when the car, a black Peugeot 307, smashed into a telegraph pole and knocked over a lamppost.

Witnesses have said the man was lucky to be alive, after he was apparently thrown into the air and landed on his back.

He was said to have attacked the female driver after the car crashed and was then seen being taken away by police.

The incident happened at about 4.30pm this afternoon in Woodhill Road, Bury.

The man is not believed to have suffered any injuries, but the driver of the car, a woman, suffered minor injuries.

Darren Entwistle, aged 51, owns a farm on Woodhill Road, only yards away from where the crash took place.

He said: "I was in the farmyard with my son and two vets when I saw this car absolutely flying down the road - it must have been going at about 80 miles an hour.

"It mounted the kerb and took two lampposts and a telegraph pole with it.

"The guy flew up into the air and landed on his back. I ran up to help him, thinking he was dead, when he got up and started beating seven shades out of the woman in the car.

"He tried to drag her out of the car and he was shouting 'I want my stuff' at her.

"He got what he wanted and tried running away but I grabbed hold of him and said 'you ain't going nowhere, pal'.

"He was loud and abusive and he kept threatening to knock me out.

"The police came and arrested him shortly after. It really was like something out of an action movie.

"He's lucky to be alive - how he hasn't died from a fall like that, I'll never know."

Witnesses said the car was being driven in an "erratic manner" along Hunstanton Drive just before the crash.

No other cars were involved, and the Peugeot has been written off.

Firefighters, police and the Highways Agency attended the scene.

A man and woman have been arrested in connection with the incident.
