NEW family homes have been unveiled in a scheme to tackle a shortage of "affordable" housing across the borough.

Mayor of Bury, Cllr Sharon Briggs, officially opened nine new properties in Bury town centre – which were all snapped up within days of being completed.

The Bolton Road site was the result of an ongoing partnership between Bury Council, St Vincent’s Housing Association and Six Town Housing who redeveloped what was formerly sheltered housing with shared bathroom facilities.

The mayor was joined by Cllr Mike Connolly, leader of Bury Council, who said: “We are absolutely committed to increasing the supply of affordable housing and improving stock across the town.

“It is fantastic to see St Vincent’s and Six Town Housing partnering together and helping to address the shortage of affordable homes in Bury.”

New tenant Sara Rahman said: “We have a spacious new home and a garden. It is really appreciated by all the family.”

Hugh Broadbent, chairman of Six Town Housing’s board who attended the official opening, added: “Since the tenants were given the keys, they have been busy settling in and adding their personal touches.”
