Man charged after car hits police

A WHITEFIELD man has been charged in connection with an incident in which a car hit two police officers.

Wayne Crompton, aged 32, of Kenmore Way, has been charged with dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking without consent, driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance and two counts of assault.

He is due to appear before Manchester magistrates today.

At about 10.50pm on Sunday, the two police officers followed what they believed to be a speeding Hyundai car in Harpurhey.

As they got out of their own car to approach the vehicle, the Hyundai collided with both the officers before leaving the scene.

Police said one officer suffered a broken arm, while the other suffered a fractured skull and bleed to the brain, and remains in a stable condition although his injury is not believed to be life-threatening.
