Fire cadets bid to set a hot pace in France

FIRE cadets from Ramsbottom hope to prove themselves “hot stuff” when they represent Greater Manchester at a mini-Olympiad event in France later this year.

And members of the public are being asked to donate spare Euros to help fund road tolls and other expenses during the event at Mulhouse from July 14 to 21.

The Ramsbottom youngsters, aged between 14 and 16, will be among a nine-strong squad to represent Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

They will be competing at the 19th International Meeting for Cadet Corps of Fire Brigades event against cadets from all over Europe. Around £6,000 has been raised so far to support the trip.

Karl Sorfleet, a Ramsbottom-based fire officer, said: “We’ve held bag packing in supermarkets, car washes and other sponsored events. We are hoping to get more money to cover things like road tolls and food. Throughout the event in France, they will be living under canvas.

“If anyone has any spare Euros which they can kindly give us, these can be handed in at Ramsbottom fire station or fire stations at Bury and Whitefield.”

Ramsbottom has hosted a community fire cadets group for more than seven years.

Mr Sorfleet added: “This involves attending once a week and working towards a BTEC in fire and rescue services in the community. The cadets carry out practical events and create a portfolio of all that they’ve done. It involves team building and doing voluntary activities in the community.”
