Talented chef in the running for Comic Relief honour

A PRESTWICH chef is on course to make a very special contribution to Comic Relief.

Mary-Ellen McTague, head chef at Aumbry restaurant in Church Lane, is taking part in smash-hit TV show The Great British Menu – and the star prize is preparing signature dishes for a Comic Relief banquet for 100 celebrities, including Gordon Ramsey and fundraisers at The Royal Albert Hall.

The latest series – the eighth – challenges food wizards to come up with a menu with a funny theme and Mary-Ellen has been starring in a series of BBC2 shows every night this week.

The 34 year old is currently leading rivals Aiden Byrne and Chris Holland in the North West heat and will discover in Friday’s show at 7.30pm if she progresses to the final.

Eight finalists who make it through from the regional heats will then prepare their menu for a judging panel and the best starter, main course, desert and fish course will make it to the final banquet menu.

This morning, Marry-Ellen was keeping tight lipped about how the contest goes.

She added: “You’ll have to wait and see. It’s great to take part and it’s a huge boost for the restaurant.”

Her dishes include a miniature bath of baked beans, to reflect that some fundraisers get sponsored to lie in such baths, Dover sole fish to recognise those who do cross-Channel swims for Comic Relief and goat, to reflect the popularity of goat as a food in developing countries.

You can taste the dishes for yourself at a special dinner at Aumbry on March 15.

Places cost £100 per person and all proceeds go to Comic Relief.
