Family pay tribute to motorcyclist who died after horror crash

A MOTORCYCLIST has died following a horror crash.

The rider, who was on a Kawasaki motorbike, was involved in a collision with a Mercedes Vito van in Radcliffe Road, Bury, near to its junction with Manchester Road at 3.50pm on Wednesday, December 19

He was unconscious after suffering a head injury and paramedics took him to Salford Royal Hospital, where he later died.

Police said the man is 23-year-old Stephen Wagstaff, a teacher at The Derby High School from the Prestwich area.

Stephen’s family has paid the following tribute to him. They said: “Stephen, 'Waggy', was an amazing son, grandson, boyfriend, brother and uncle.
“He was Blackpool FC to the core but loved all sports, life in general and was passionate about being a teacher.

“He loved America and spending time with his partner Tamara and their dog Louie.

“Stephen was a good, kind person about whom no one had a bad word to say. He would help anyone in any way he could and always saw the good in others.

“We will miss him dearly and cannot imagine life without him. We loved him so much.”

Police Constable Ian Beaumont said: “This is a tragic incident in which a young man has lost his life. Our thoughts are with Stephen’s family and friends as they try to come to terms with the loss of their loved one and we are doing all we can to support them at this devastating time.

“If anyone witnessed the collision yesterday afternoon, I would ask them to please contact officers in the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741.”

A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received the call at 3.52pm for an incident on Radcliffe Road at the junction with Manchester Road.

"The rider was confirmed as being unconscious with a head injury."

A motorcycle and Mercedes Vito were involved in a collision on Radcliffe Road at the junction with Manchester Road at 3.55pm on Wednesday 19 December 2012, a

Stephen Wagstaff, aged 23 and from the Prestwich area, was taken to hospital suffering from serious head injuries, but sadly later died.

No one else was injured during the collision.

PC Ian Beaumont said: "This is a tragic incident in which a young man has lost his life.

"Our thoughts are with Stephen’s family and friends, who are understandably devastated at the loss of their loved one, and we are doing all we can to support them.

"If anyone witnessed the collision yesterday afternoon, I would ask them to please contact officers in the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741."

R.I.P Stephan Wagstaff. A teacher at the derby high school. round the age of 23. All the pupils are absalutely gutter.He tought me a lot and was easy to talk to. never will i forget him. Regards to his friends and family. thoughts are with you all. x

mr steven wagstaff aka 'waggy' was one of my closest friends it is a tradgedy to have lost such a kindhearted person .. my thoughts are with his family and his girlfriend x a loss that should not have happened to someone of such a young age , words cannot discribe how many people his death has affected x rest in peace wag x we will remember you always xxx

R.I.P Mr. Wagstaff, the accident happened right in front of my daughters after they were asked to stay a bit late at sch to reherse for their christmas show but little did they know it was one of their own teacher. They are very devastated. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends especially his daughters.

So so sad, I just hope his family does not read this report as this is the worse typing rror I have seen in a while, does no one proff read these articles, I will quote from above "The rider was confirmed as being unconscious and bleeding to the head with a head injury. The hospital was given a heads up before the motorcyclist’s arrival.” This is very insensitive and should be re worded!! RIP Stephen Wagstaff

I know Stephen he's the Sam age as my son they were in infant school together and Im so shocked and very upset he's been killed so tragically so young his dad use to walk him round to my house after school to play with my lad lovely little chap :( Im so glad someone was with him and he wasn't alone thank you who ever you are x

pmscar. thank you for staying for stephen wagstaff aka waggy, he is our daughters boyfriend and she has gained some comfort to know he was not alone. thank you for caring for him. we would like to thank everybody for their kind words waggy was a brilliant person who lite up the world we shared with him he was an inspiration to all who knew him young and old our thoughts are also with all his school children who he adored teaching. rest in peace son we love you and miss u so much.

As a fellow motorcyclist, who rode past the scene of this tragic accident last night, I am deeply shocked by this. My daughter is a student at Derby, and I know that she, and all her friends are very upset. Stephen was a much liked and respected teacher. Our deepest sympathy to Stephen's family and friends. Nothing is going to ease the heartache of what has happened but I have read nothing but nice comments about Stephen. He was obviously a very well liked teacher and no one had a bad word to say about him. God knows why he takes such good hearted people so early. I hope his family and those closest to him can take comfort in all these comments. On a seperate note there are too many accidents happening on this road.....something needs to be done so another great person isn't taken away.

Stephen Wagstaff has touched the hearts of so many children and families connected to the Derby High school. He has taught my children with humour and respect and the loss they are feeling is overwhelming. His form class should have been having a party for christmas with him today and they have taken in flowers instead! We are all in complete shock at the loss of such a good young man and our thoughts are with both his family and girlfriend at this terribly sad time.

Rest in peace sir. You would always brighten up our for room with your glistening smile every morning. You always encouraged us to do good and well in our lives. Even though I only knew you for 3 months, it honestly felt more!! School will never be the same without you. You may be gone but will never be forgotten! RIP Steve. I was lucky to have worked with you. The affection everyone at school felt has been beautifully and genuinely expressed by the students in their words and gestures today. You were fantastic with the kids and we will all miss your care, energy and humanity. In your time at the Derby, I never heard a bad word about you, except maybe one or two from me when you wore that blue tie to wind up us United fans at the end of last season... good-natured of course, as things always were with you. I can't imagine school without you and feel devastated at the injustice of the loss of a good man far too young. I am also saddened at all the young lives deprived of the great guidance you would have given them. Wherever you are, know that you will always be remembered with the greatest fondness and respect. All my sympathy to your family and girlfriend.

I have known "Waggy" for many years and i can honestly say what a fine young man he was. I`m still shocked at the news of his accident. Hi Mrs Wagstaff, I'm unbelievably sorry for your loss, I can't even imagine what you, and your family are going through. I can't even begin to think what I might say but we should definitely talk at some point. I live in Irlam so meeting might be a little hard, but I will try my best to arrange something, and answer any and all questions you may have.
