£15 a metre will pay to shift hospice to new base

BURY Hospice has set up a new fund to pay for the final cost of moving to its new home.

Thanks to donations from people across the borough and a large legacy, fundraisers are well on their way to meeting the £5 million needed to build a new, larger hospice in Rochdale Old Road, Bury.

Building work is expected to finish in December and the hospice will be equipped and commissioned ready to open in early spring 2013.

A new fund, named Together We Can Make It Happen, has been launched to raise the £100,000 needed for the move. It will pay for some final parts of the new hospice and the actual move of patients, staff and services to the new building.

Jacqui Comber, the hospice’s chief executive, said “The people of Bury have been magnificent in helping us reach our dream of building a much-needed new hospice we can all be proud of.

“We are now very close to being able to deliver our promise to the people of Bury, to provide a very special place to offer compassionate palliative and end-of-life care to all those who need it. This is our final ask to the people of Bury to help us in the opening of our new hospice.”

Hospice staff have worked with Fluid Creative in Bury to create a “journey map” from the existing hospice in Dumers Lane, Radcliffe, to the new site.

They have calculated that each metre of the journey will cost £15 and they hope people will support the move by donating in “metres”.

Mrs Comber said: “We have some other funds still to find and we are under way in securing these, but the achievement of this £100,000 fund will make a significant boost to our outstanding target. Please help us in any way you can — Together We Can Make it Happen. “ To make a donation: call 0161 797 1748 or go to justgiving.com/together-We-Can-Make-It-Happen.
