Council is told to find extra £6m in savings

The financial plight surrounding Bury Council has deepened with the shock news that bosses will be forced to dig deep to find an extra £6 million of 'savage' saivngs over the next two years.

Originally, it was forecast that the savings requirement would be £17.8 million to cover the period until 2015 but the amount could increase even further, depending on the full impact of the authority's final settlement from government.

The latest news was given by Cllr John Smith, cabinet members for corporate affairs. He said: "This latest information means we now have to find at least a further £6 million of saivngs over the coming two years, possibly more depending on the full impact of the final settlement."

Cllr Smith stressed that the council has already cut £5.5 million from its budget in efficiency savings this year.
