A man who fled the scene of a collision that ultimately resulted in the death of a man has been jailed.

Afzaal Mohammed Khan, ahed 36, of Brandlesholme Road, Bury, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving following a trial at Bolton Crown Court. He had earlier admitted failing to stop at the scene of a collision, failing to report a collision and driving without insurance.

He was today sentenced to two-and-a-half years imprisonment and is disqualified from driving once he leaves prison.

David Bennett, aged 63, was walking to a local shop and was crossing Wash Lane, Bury at about 6.55pm on 18 October 2009.

At the same time Khan was speeding along the road at between 40 and 48mph and drove through a red light at junction with Parsonage Street, where he collided with David.

David was taken to hospital for treatment to serious injuries, including two broken legs, a broken pelvis and collapsed lung.

He died in hospital on 10 January 2010 after contracting Bronchitis and C Difficile.

A post mortem concluded the injuries suffered in the collision contributed to his death.

David leaves behind a partner, aged 70, and two step sons.

In a Victim Impact Statement, Jeanette Lyall, David⿿s partner, said: "I am aware of the circumstances of the journey that the driver that collided with David was undertaking, in that he was taking documents to relatives at the airport.

"The circumstances of the collision make me think that the driver was rushing, angry and not focussed on his driving. It all seems so insignificant compared to the devastating effect it had on David and I and also the car drivers family.

"I believe that that the car driver has prolonged this by firstly not stopping at the scene, but then secondly, even when confronted with independent witness evidence, he took the matter to trial."

Police Constable Paul Symes, from GMP's Specialist Operations Branch, said: "Khan ignored a red light and ploughed into David, where he left him critically ill in the middle of the road.

"He did not stop to help and he did not seek to get help by reporting what had happened, proving he is a callous individual with a blatant disregard for life.

"David's loved ones have been left devastated by what has happened and sadly, we are once again reminded of the terrible consequences of not giving the laws of the road the respect and consideration they deserve."
